Practitioner Perspectives: Improving 9th Grade On-Track at Castlemont High

I was proud to be featured alongside colleagues from Oakland’s Castlemont High School in the keynote Bob Hughes’ delivered at the 2021 Carnegie Summit on Improvement in Education. Bob, K12 Education Director at the Gates Foundation, interviewed us about our experiences applying improvement science to systems and supports for 9th graders. I’ve coached Castle’s 9th grade team in their on-track work since January 2020, as part of CORE Districts’ Breakthrough Success Community.

The team spoke passionately about the “why” for their work as educators, the impact of strong relationships on students’ lives, and how they view continuous improvement as a lever for educational justice.
